Dragonflies in Pink

Happy little dragonfly on the happy little wall :)
The plan was that I would decorate my girls' room in a "Fairytale Forest" theme. So far, it's all bugs and flowers, but I figure even a fairly forest has bugs in it, right? (I know around here, any time you step off the porch the mosquitoes start swarming, one doesn't even have to venture into the forest.)

Speaking of bugs, I found this super cute knick-knack shelf today at a secondhand shop, and I couldn't pass it up. And get this--it was only $3! I don't know if the girls are really old enough to appreciate a "theme" but they did seem to love this piece as much as I did (read: they kept trying to play with it as we walked around the store), so it eases the guilt a little about spending cash on non-essentials.

And sometimes I fear that although I'm decorating their room, I'm doing it mostly for me. Having items that I know they love too in the room also assuages that guilt. Yeah, I guess I'm just a bundle of guilt, but that's motherhood, I guess.

If I stop to think about it, I always worry if I'm doing things right... is this the right food to make my kids healthy? does the educational value of this TV show outweigh the fact that it's a sedentary occupation? do I listen enough to my kids? am I too tough on them? There are always questions. But looking up and seeing this little guy smiling down at me helps me to take a breath and realize that everything is going to be okay. And seeing my tiny girls laughing and smiling up at their new silly bug is priceless. So, yeah. Good purchase.

Sorry It's Been So Long!

It's been a while since I've posted, and no one is more upset about that than I am. For the last week and a half, I've accomplished pretty much nil when it comes to crafting (or just about anything else). It's not that I've suddenly become incredibly lazy, or even that I've been that busy. In fact, I've had tons of time since last weekend was a holiday and I only actually went to work two days this past week. The problem is that I've been feeling like a steaming pile of crap. Uh-oh, that's right... I whipped out one of them 4-letter-words: crap.

Today has been migraine day 11. Don't worry, folks, I have been to the doctor. I'm on top of this. I'm taking my drugs and going to get my head scanned. I'm a compliant patient. Only I'm not feeling better yet, and have not been able to do the craft I planned for last weekend yet. I've been exhausted and nauseous and had a dull to sharp pain from my temple to my neck. I'm starting to get sick of this whole being sick thing...

Anyhow, not trying to throw a pity party for myself, just wanted to let you folks know I haven't forgotten you, I've just been indisposed. Hopefully, I'll be back on my feet soon and we'll have some fun creating awesome things together! In the meantime, if you want to share some of the crafty things you have been doing, please feel free to post it on my Facebook page. I'd love to hear what you are doing, and maybe you can inspire each other until I'm back on my feet again :)

Dollhouse Furniture Improv

You never know where you'll find something that will be perfect for your dollhouse. Key chains, small toys, food wrappers, candy dispensers.... That's right, candy dispensers. Today as we strolled along the aisles at the local Foodland, what did mine eyes happen to land upon, but a candy display... Suckers, gum, gummy worms, and sour apple toilet candy. That's right, you didn't misread.

Sour power! Two plunger suckers that dip into sour power stored inside the
toilet bowl. This was one of those situations where I bought this for my kid,
but it was really for me ;)

This is not the right scale for the GI Joes (1/6), but will work for my other
dollhouses (1/12).

Appropriately, my son shared his candy with his potty-mouthed daddy.
(Sorry, Dear, the pun was too tempting...)

The deal was I would buy the candy for my kid to eat if I got the toilet when
he was done with it. So, as promised, he handed it over. I peeled off all the
stickers, and voila! Lime green toilet for my dollhouse.

If only we had found one a little bigger, it would have matched the green
and white polka dot sink in the GI Joe house.
I have plans to build another 1/12 scale dollhouse (strictly for my own pleasure), and I think this will be a nice piece for it. I wonder if I should try to paint it white? Perhaps white spray paint, or the good ol' white nail polish again? We'll see. Just another project on the back burner, but someday my friends I will tackle it.

Project Preview

My best friend is getting married this winter, and has chosen black and white damask for her decor. Although she's not quite the penny-pincher I am, she also loves a good sale and enjoys good deals. When she saw these table rounds on etsy (maybe not this exact one, but similar) she fell in love. And when I told her we could easily make these for a fraction of the cost, it didn't take her too long to agree to the project.

I've had 7 yards (if I remember correctly) of black and white damask sitting in my sewing room for the last two months, just waiting until I had the time to tackle the project. With the three day weekend coming up, I intend to finally get started on this. I'll post a tutorial when I'm done.
